Bauli, environment and safety
 |
The search for product quality originates essentially from the need to improve the level of service to the client/customer and, as a consequence, to also safeguard their health, as much as possible. This goal cannot set aside the protection of both the Environment and health of cooperators for Bauli.
With tireless commitment, Bauli has worked hard to obtain important certifications: UNI EN ISO 140001:2004 for Environmental Management and BSI OHSAS 180001 for Occupational Health and Safety.

Bauli and the environment
 |
In 2007 BAULI carried out an environmental analysis to identify the environmental aspects within the company and the related impacts outside of the company. This involved analysing all the company activities to pinpoint any possible effects on the external environment in terms of managing natural resources, energy consumption, waste disposal, atmospheric emissions, noise levels, etc.
The result of this activity made it possible for Bauli to identify the methods and means required to assess and manage both direct and indirect environmental aspects.
|
1 Environmental protection
The environmental performances are measured by the company daily. Each year improvement objectives are established to reduce energy and water consumption, seeking the best methods, organizational solutions, and plant systems.
2 Low carbon footprint
Bauli is one of the few companies in Italy which has invested in building a combined heat and power plant to generate its own electricity. The plant also recovers the thermal energy it generates, which can then be used as a heating source. This system has a significant impact on overall energy savings.
3 Water drainage monitoring
The drain lines connected to the water purification plant are subject to strict monitoring with correct maintenance and management, and are in compliance with all applicable laws.
Each week, the chemical-microbiological lab performs 13 checks. Each operator in turn performs 11 checks a day to ensure that the drains are working properly.
The technical characteristics of the purification plant and the control system adopted guarantee a reduced impact on the environment.
4 Waste sorting
For about ten years now the company has established a system to properly sort all waste. This also helps to minimize any environmental impact that may be caused by the Company’s production.
A further effort activated by the Company was to set up compactors at its facilities. These compactors compact the various types of waste and therefore dramatically reduce the volume of truck traffic required for hauling away the waste.
5 Eco-friendly
When new product lines are created, Bauli regularly analyses the resources used in production - such as raw materials and packaging - to find ways to make the process more eco friendly; solutions include using green materials, streamlining the use of materials, and packaging and packing analysis.
Packaging material reduction example.
One of the many examples we would like to mention is the package size and packaging dimensions of the Colomba Bauli present in the Easter 2008 campaign: this intervention resulted in a substantial reduction in packaging materials (165,000 Kg less in paper for the box, 125,000 kg less in paper for packaging, 3,000 kg less between films and straps).
6 Indirect environmental aspects (suppliers – stakeholders)
All of the Company’s suppliers are selected also based on their compliance to ISO 14001 (environmental management system).
Bauli is also committed to raising supplier awareness and making sure that over time, its service providers improve their conduct in terms of environmental impact.
For example, the vehicles loading incoming and outgoing goods for the Company are frequently checked on parameters which also include the cleanliness of the vehicle, the driver’s uniform and conduct (safety).
Bauli is also careful to minimize the environmental impact of services carried out by suppliers inside the company.
For example Bauli provides electric pumps for the trucks that come to unload bulk raw materials in the silos (flour, sugar, and eggs), therefore eliminating the need to use the truck’s engine. Consequently, this significantly reduces exhaust gas emissions.
Bauli and safety
 |
Bauli also takes great care when it comes to protecting its workers’ health. This starts with frequent training and awareness raising activities for all company levels on safety-related themes and concepts. A set of rules and regulations have been adopted and the company structure includes in-house emergency evacuation, first aid, and fire prevention teams. For two years now, Bauli is one of the few companies that has organized a firefighting event to which all employees are invited to attend.
The results of these activities throughout the years are easy to see: the ongoing commitment towards each and every safety-related aspect has led to a significant reduction in the number of accidents, as well as the frequency rate, seriousness, and incident rate.

1 Safety–related training and information
Through adequate organization and employee training Bauli strives to raise the awareness of all employees in order to prevent any situation that could be harmful to health, indicating the company objectives and the systems required to reach them.
For Bauli, therefore, proper training and information are fundamental tools in order for its staff to be able to work independently in safe conditions.
2 Safety management as an everyday activity
All safety-related problems are tackled in:
- a monthly safety meeting, which serves to keep staff members up to date on Company accidents/ emergencies, to provide training and information on the methods/procedures adopted by other companies, and to establish objectives and methods for improvement. The meeting is attended by those involved in safety management, specifically 18 people in Management: Technical, Human Resources, Logistics, and Production.
- a monthly Factory meeting which serves to point out accidents, if any, that may have occurred during the month, with a related analysis along with suggestions on system interventions and improvement actions. All workers with personnel management responsibilities participate in these meetings, specifically 90 people.
3 Workplace safety
An extensive risk assessment of each workstation and activity resulted in safety-related regulations which include precise instructions on clothing, use of personal protection equipment (PPE), correct conduct and hygiene procedures.
4 Emergencies
To handle any emergencies, the Company has an in-house structure that includes:
- • evacuation teams
- • first aid teams
- • fire prevention teams
these teams undergo training and participate in frequent
refresher courses.
Routine evacuation drills are carried out for both the production lines and the offices.
One unique aspect of Bauli is that it organizes an
annual Firefighting Event, competition between teams of emergency, which involves all employees of the fire prevention teams at the group’s production sites, and all employees are invited to come and watch. This event provides an opportunity to raise awareness and promote involvement. The event features a practical test, that follows a period of specific training, on fire-related emergency procedures for members of the fire prevention teams, including putting out a real fire.
